Geothermal in Pakistan: cooling, heating and practical choices.
Geothermal air conditioning uses the ground as a heat source or heat sink for a building. GeoAirCon designs ground-source cooling, heating, and thermal storage systems for homes, businesses, and institutions in Pakistan.
Choosing a system starts with the building, the available land, and the required comfort—not a fixed bore depth or a promised percentage saving. This guide explains the options and what to check before installation.
How geothermal cooling works
During cooling, a ground-source heat pump transfers heat from the building into a buried ground loop. In heating mode, the direction is reversed. The relatively stable ground temperature can reduce the temperature difference the heat pump works against compared with outdoor air during extreme weather.
Shallow geothermal climate control is different from geothermal electricity generation. A building system does not need a hot spring or a deep, high-temperature reservoir. Its feasibility depends on the local ground, the heat exchanger, and the building’s heating and cooling demand.
Direct ground cooling uses the ground without a compressor-driven cooling cycle. It can provide useful pre-cooling or sensible cooling, but cannot deliver arbitrarily low temperatures. Humidity and the desired indoor temperature remain important design constraints.
Which geothermal system fits your building?
Ground-source heat pump / geothermal AC
Consider this when you need controlled room temperature and dehumidification. A vertical ground loop can suit a constrained site if drilling access and geology permit. The compressor, pumps, indoor units, and loop must be sized together. See GeoAirCon’s Geo AC system.
Earth air tunnel / earth air heat exchanger
Buried air pipes pre-condition incoming air. This can suit sites with open land or construction-stage access. Include drainage, condensate management, filtration, inspection access, and fan pressure losses in the design. Treat it as pre-conditioning rather than assuming it replaces full air conditioning. Explore the Geo Air Tunnel.
Geothermal radiant cooling
A cooled ceiling or roof can remove sensible heat quietly. Surface temperatures need to stay above the indoor dew point to avoid condensation, so humidity control matters. The building envelope and cooling load determine whether radiant delivery can meet the requirement. See the radiant system.
Thermal storage with solar and heat pumps
A thermal storage tank shifts cooling or heating from one time of day to another. Size it from the required thermal load and usable temperature range, including losses and pump energy. It is an add-on to a cooling or heating system. Explore thermal storage.
Geothermal installation cost in Pakistan
GeoAirCon’s system comparison lists indicative installed prices: Rs. 70,000–120,000 per ton for air tunnels, Rs. 160,000–240,000 per ton for Geo AC, and Rs. 140,000–210,000 per ton of sensible capacity for radiant systems. The thermal storage add-on is listed at Rs. 120,000 per 20 kWh of thermal storage.
These options do not provide identical comfort or humidity control. Compare the complete installation scope, not just the price per ton. Final proposals need to define drilling, pipework, indoor equipment, controls, electrical work, commissioning, and any additional humidity treatment.
What determines savings and payback?
Annual operating hours, electricity tariffs, the existing AC’s performance, insulation, ground conditions, and pump and fan power all affect the result. Cooling-heavy buildings also need the ground loop checked for heat accumulation over time. Ask for estimated annual electricity use and measured commissioning results at a stated indoor comfort condition.
Assessing a site in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore or Karachi
A single ground temperature or loop depth should not be assumed across Pakistan. For a project in any of these cities, GeoAirCon starts with site-specific information before recommending the ground loop or cooling system. Mentioning a city here does not imply a local branch or an identical design for every property.
- Ground and drilling: soil or rock conditions, groundwater, underground utilities, available space, and rig access.
- Building load: roof and wall insulation, glazing, solar exposure, occupancy, equipment heat, and ventilation.
- Comfort and humidity: target indoor temperature, seasonal moisture loads, and the need for dehumidification.
- Operating pattern: daytime versus night-time demand, solar availability, and whether thermal storage is useful.
For an existing building, include the current AC capacity and electricity bills. For a new build, share drawings before landscaping and services restrict access. See GeoAirCon’s field installation portfolio for examples of drilling, ground-loop pipework, controls, and indoor-unit integration.
Common questions about geothermal in Pakistan
Can geothermal cooling work in Pakistan?
Yes, where the building load and ground conditions support a suitable design. A buried loop exchanges heat with the ground. A ground-source heat pump can provide controlled cooling and heating, while direct ground cooling has a temperature limit set by the ground and heat exchangers. A site assessment determines which approach fits.
How much does geothermal AC cost in Pakistan?
GeoAirCon currently lists an indicative installed cost of Rs. 160,000–240,000 per ton for its geothermal heat pump / Geo AC system. This is a planning range, not a quotation. Drilling conditions, access, cooling capacity, ground-loop design, and the final scope affect cost. Request a site assessment for a project-specific proposal.
Is an earth air tunnel the same as a geothermal heat pump?
No. An earth air tunnel moves air through buried pipes to pre-cool or pre-heat it. A ground-source heat pump uses a refrigeration cycle and a ground heat exchanger to deliver controlled heating and cooling. An air tunnel normally needs another system to manage humidity and peak cooling demand.
Can geothermal replace an inverter AC?
A correctly sized ground-source heat pump can provide the heating, cooling, and dehumidification expected from an AC. Direct ground cooling and radiant cooling are different: their output depends on ground temperature and they may need separate humidity control. Compare complete systems at the same indoor temperature and humidity.
How much electricity will a geothermal system save?
There is no single saving that applies to every building. Compare total system electricity, including pumps and fans, against the existing AC under comparable weather, occupancy, temperature, and humidity. GeoAirCon’s published performance figures are indicative or targets and require project-specific engineering validation.
Can a geothermal system run with solar panels and thermal storage?
Yes. A compatible heat pump can use solar electricity, and a thermal storage tank can shift cooling to later hours. Solar output, storage capacity, heat losses, and the building’s night-time load determine how long the system can operate. Thermal storage stores heating or cooling energy; it does not supply electricity to other appliances.
